MDFD 2026 Unveils Finalists Bringing Bold Narratives and Fresh Perspectives to Sri Lanka’s Fashion Stage
Colombo, Wednesday 13 May 2026 — MDFD 2026 is set to spotlight a new wave of creative talent, announcing its lineup of finalists who will present collections that go beyond fashion—telling deeply personal stories shaped by identity, emotion, heritage, and transformation.
This year’s finalists represent a dynamic cross-section of emerging designers from leading institutions across Sri Lanka, each bringing a distinctive voice and a powerful concept to the runway.
Among them, Shamoodah Rizwan (21, Campusone) presents “Born of Darkness, Raised in Power,” a striking exploration of resilience inspired by the bond between mother and daughter. Her collection channels strength through contrast, using black as a central motif across casual, sportswear, and evening silhouettes to reflect protection, elegance, and authority.
Dulini Withanage (30, University of Moratuwa) draws inspiration from the “mother tree,” crafting an emotional narrative that reflects nurturing, sacrifice, and the unseen support systems that shape growth and identity.

With a strong visual direction, Wathmini Lavanya Dissanayake (21, International Academy of Fashion) presents “Anvaya: The Blue Between Us,” a couture collection inspired by Spanish blue tiles. Her work translates intricate Mediterranean patterns into contemporary designs, symbolising connection, lineage, and shared heritage through refined silhouettes and a serene blue-and-white palette.
Janani Nawodya (24, SLITA) brings a poignant narrative through “The Silent Smile,” a collection that captures the contrast between outward composure and inner emotional struggle, reflecting the lived reality of many young individuals navigating family challenges.
Celebrating cultural symbolism and femininity, M. Veenu Amasha (22, University of Moratuwa) unveils “Her Power, Her Reflection,” inspired by the Dancing Lady flower, expressing generational strength passed from mother to daughter through bold textures, movement, and colour.
Completing the finalist lineup are Niki Vagail (22, Singer Fashion Academy), inspired by the symbolism of the pomegranate, and Ashen Rishmal (27, Singer Fashion Academy), whose concept draws from the blue pansy butterfly—both bringing unique interpretations rooted in nature and transformation.
